Saying I DO is more than just an event – it’s the kind of moment that changes your life forever, the kind of moment you want to remember fondly forever.
Of course, there are a lot of factors to consider when planning your wedding ceremony – and etiquette isn’t an unimportant one in any way. Sure, things may have changed a lot in the past decade or so – but even so, some wedding ceremony etiquette rules stand as strong as ever.
What are some of the lesser known ones? We have some tips – continue reading if you want to learn more about this.
- It’s probably not OK to ask people to stand. If your ceremony is very short (e.g. 15 minutes), that might be fine – but anything longer than that will be quite tiresome, especially for the seniors. Also, keep in mind that your guests will be standing during the Cocktail Hour as well, so unless you have some sort of lounge space prepped for them, asking them to stand during the ceremony might be too much.
- If your Ring Bearer is very young, you can definitely ask him to carry down the aisle something that’s not as precious (and easy to lose). It could be a basket of flowers, a funny sign, or even just a box without the rings in it.
- If you want your wedding to be officiated by a friend, be sure to do your research. In most states, ministers can even be ordained online, in a matter of minutes – but it’s always safer to do the research and know exactly what the legislation in your specific state is.
- Speaking of ceremony officiants, do invite them to the wedding reception. Regardless of whether it’s a friend, your minister, a priest, or simply a government worker, it is polite to invite them to the reception. Unless they are somewhat close to your family (e.g. they have been your priest for a long time), they will most likely turn down the invitation – but even so, inviting them is customary.
